Empowering Laurel & Jones County Students
The local charity helps Laurel and Jones County students who have reached higher educational attainment.
Ruth's Education and Relief Services (RERS) Inc. is a nonprofit 501c3 Organization focused on Education Improvement and Disaster Relief Support for Laurel and Jones County residents. We need additional financial sponsors to fill the void for necessary school supplies for marginalized families and support critical math and reading tutoring programs for the upcoming 2024 school year.
Our organization was founded in loving memory of Katy Arlington Buxton, who passed away in January 2022. She was educated at Mt. Olive School (Laurel, Mississippi) and attended Alcorn College (now Alcorn State University), where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1936. She dedicated her entire life to the youth, educational uplift, and relief of the suffering.
Despite being a newly formed Mississippi-based charity, we have received a sizeable stationery donation from Laurel Walmart as well as a financial donation from Howard Industries in support of our education initiative. RERS Education nonprofit's goal is to assist schools in tackling the problems of limited resources and minimal achievement gaps. Far too often, schools lack what they need.
This is particularly true of schools serving low-income and minority students. Laurel School District Students have a math proficiency of 27% and a reading proficiency score of 22% overall. Our kids are in desperate need of additional support at all levels, as Laurel currently ranks in the bottom 50% of the state for standardized testing. Our goal is to support multiple schools and assist in strengthening their educational attainment for our Laurel and Jones County students.
Vision: To support families and property during times of emergencies such as the result of financial distress, disaster relief, and ongoing youth educational welfare purposes.
Mission: RERS aims to provide timely and necessary humanity to impacted families through education resources and aid to remedy substandard living conditions.
Goal 1 — To reduce the education gap for Jones County students in achievement and opportunity by providing additional resources and skills to the Community.
Goal 2 — To aid the Community during imminent emergencies through available short- and long-term resources provided to RERS.
